Wuhan, CHINA Experiences New Wave of Flu Outbreak,

The problem is that the Chinese government does not provide systematic data for the outside world to understand the real situation,' said Sean Lin. Wuhan is experiencing a new wave of influenza outbreaks five years into COVID-19, with some schools canceling classes.

According to the latest data from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the influenza virus positivity rate continues to increase, with more than 99 percent being influenza A, state-run China Central Television reported on January 5. Disease control departments across the country have also issued health advisories.

On December 30, 2024, the Wuhan city government republished a local media article entitled “Highly Contagious and Susceptible to Mutation! Wuhan CDC Issues Warning,” stating that the city has entered a peak period of respiratory illness, with influenza viruses as the main pathogen.

Chen Banghua, representative of the Wuhan CDC, explained that influenza spreads through various channels and is highly contagious. Asymptomatic carriers of influenza viruses are common, accounting for up to 30 percent of cases.

However, online discussions among parents in Wuhan suggest that several viruses other than influenza A are spreading simultaneously.

On January 1, a mother in Wuhan shared online, “Norovirus, influenza A, and COVID-19 are all circulating. In our family of four, three people contracted norovirus, and one person contracted influenza A.”

Another Wuhan mother responded to the post, “I have flu A, and my child has norovirus. I had not yet recovered from flu A when I contracted norovirus from my son. That's how I spent the last day of 2024.”

On January 2, a parent from Wuchang District in Wuhan told The Epoch Times that many students at her child's school were infected. Three classes in his third grade class had to cancel classes, and his fourth grade class was also affected, with more than 30 students taking sick leave before the New Year holiday.

"Most cases are influenza A, but my child was lucky because he had a bacterial bronchitis infection, although it was still serious, his throat was completely swollen, and he had a high fever of 39.6°C," he said.

Schools Suspend Classes,

On December 28, 2024, an online message circulated among parents in Wuhan indicating that an influenza outbreak had caused several elementary schools to suspend classes.

The message cited internal news from an elementary school in Jiang'an District and urged parents to remain vigilant, take protective measures, and try to avoid illnesses that could affect midterm exams.

On January 1, a parent in Wuhan commented on the post, saying that more than 100 of the 300 children in their child's kindergarten had taken sick leave.

A parent from Jiang'an District commented on December 27, 2024, “We took online classes for three days this week.”

Expert: No need to panic

Sean Lin—a microbiologist, assistant professor of Biomedical Sciences, and member of the Current Danger: China Committee, which has been monitoring the situation in China—advised the Chinese public not to panic.
