Residents in Nanjing, China experience facial paralysis after being infected with "Flu A", doctors warn of the risk of side effects

The pandemic in China continues to escalate. Recently, several residents in Nanjing experienced facial paralysis after being infected with "Flu A". These symptoms include tilted corners of the mouth, difficulty closing the eyes, and others. Doctors warn that if not treated in time, this condition can leave side effects such as facial asymmetry or muscle weakness.

According to a report from the Yangtze Evening News, a Nanjing resident named Zhang (42 years old) recently experienced fever, cough and body aches. He was later diagnosed with “Flu A”. However, during the treatment period, he suddenly noticed that the left side of his face had become stiff, he could not smile normally, had difficulty closing his eyes, and experienced pain behind his ear.

Zhang then underwent treatment at the neurology department of the Eastern Regional Air Force Hospital and was diagnosed with facial paralysis.

The director of the neurology department, Jiao Dongsheng, mentioned that his department had recently received several patients with similar conditions, all of whom experienced facial paralysis shortly after contracting the flu.

“Symptoms include tilted corners of the mouth, difficulty closing the eyes, differences in eye size, loss of frown lines on the forehead, and a decrease in the sense of taste on the tip of the tongue. Some patients even experience difficulty swallowing water, leakage when drinking, or constant drooling. Due to facial muscle paralysis, food debris often remains in the mouth, which can interfere with daily activities.”

He explained that most facial paralysis patients will show significant improvement within 7-10 days. However, around 1/3 of patients need 1-2 months to recover completely. If not treated quickly, around 10% of patients can experience side effects such as facial asymmetry or facial muscle weakness.

“Some people initially thought it was just a toothache. However, when their symptoms worsen and they come to the hospital, they have already missed the best time for treatment,” said Jiao Dongsheng. He reminded that parents infected with flu should immediately seek medical treatment, because apart from facial paralysis, they are also at risk of experiencing an acute stroke.

The report also stated that a hospital in Nanjing recently admitted several facial paralysis patients, most of whom had previously been infected with flu about 7-10 days before the complaints appeared.

News about facial paralysis after being infected with Flu A sparked public attention. Some mainland Chinese netizens wrote, "Flu A is bad these days, we have to be alert." Another said: “I just got it, this morning I realized my face was paralyzed.” There were also those who said, "My mother experienced it too."

Previously, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many people also reported facial paralysis after being infected with the virus. This has led many people to suspect that the term “Flu A” used in official reports is actually another code word for COVID-19.

In recent years, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) government has continued to cover up the truth about the pandemic situation at home, and local media have rarely reported on it. However, since the end of 2024, several regions in China have experienced another spike in fever cases, with many hospitals overcrowded. In fact, crematorium staff on social media revealed that the number of deaths had recently increased, so the public was advised to be alert.

On January 16, the CCP's state media, Xinhua, shockingly reported on the pandemic prevention measures carried out by the CCP's State Council prevention and control mechanism, in which COVID-19 was again mentioned. They also called for strengthening pandemic control at borders, accommodation, travel and restaurants, as well as ensuring medical and emergency response readiness.

On January 17, China's National Health Commission acknowledged the spread of respiratory diseases, but stated that “Human metapneumovirus (HMPV)” is not a new virus and only accounts for a small proportion of cases. This strange phenomenon shows that China is most likely experiencing a new wave of the pandemic. (Hui)
