Awaiting Death at a Level Crossing: The Bekasi Tragedy and the Fragile Foundation of Our Railway Safety
The heartbreaking tragedy that occurred in East Bekasi on April 27, 2026, was more than just a statistic in the news. The incident, involving a women-only Commuter Line train (KRL) and a stalled taxi, which then resulted in a fatal collision with the Argo Bromo train, was a clear manifestation of the systemic failure that has long plagued Indonesia's transportation sector. With at least 16 lives lost, this incident shook public confidence in one of the backbones of mass transportation in Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek).
