Protecting South Korea's Freedom: Professors Across the Country Condemn Impeachment

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was dismissed through impeachment by parliament after declaring martial law on December 3. Currently, the trial of the case is underway. On Thursday (23/1/2025), several members of the Korean Selar Professor Alliance held a general meeting in front of Gwanghwamun station, Seoul. The South Korean Professors Alliance stated that the impeachment of the president was illegal, and criticized the opposition party for disrupting the country's constitution.

A professor from Keimyung University warned pro-North Korean forces, pro-Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and South Korean anti-democracy groups not to fight against democracy.

He also stated that the Korean people would rise up and bring them to justice. The professor also urged the Central Election Commission to explain the rumored election fraud.

“Korea's free constitutional system is collapsing. Korea is at a crossroads: will we be pulled by pro-North Korean forces towards authoritarianism, become a CCP vassal state, or maintain freedom towards prosperity,” said Professor Lee Ji-yong of Keimyung University.

“Korea's free democracy is based on elections, and the Central Election Commission has the responsibility to protect the integrity of elections. "However, doubts have arisen regarding election fraud which must be clarified to ensure transparency and fairness," he added.

The martial law declared by President Yoon on December 3 lasted only six hours, making it the shortest martial law period in the world. This happened because the President accepted parliament's request to lift military emergency.

However, the opposition parties considered the decision as a rebellion and initiated impeachment against the President. After the first impeachment vote failed, they again proposed impeachment on the grounds that the previous vote was invalid.

“In the second impeachment vote, they added charges of rebellion that were not mentioned in the first impeachment and influenced some ruling party lawmakers to support them,” said Professor Kim Byung-joon of Gangnam University.

“This is a clear insult to the Korean constitution and the Korean people. "This is a serious violation of the law and, in short, a fraudulent impeachment," he said.

On the same day, various community groups also took part in the general meeting. They consider that the accusation of rebellion against President Yoon Suk-yeol and impeachment is something that has never happened before. They also emphasized that democracy needs to be protected.

Secretary General of the Free Market Institute, Lee Han-yeol: “The current conditions are not due to invasion by external enemies, but domestic politicians who took advantage of elections to gain power, forcing the people to fight back. We believe that through people's resistance, we will eventually overcome this crisis.”

Rally participants expressed concern about the current situation. They called for the dissolution of parties collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), an end to the manipulation of public opinion, and the elimination of election fraud and other bad acts. (Hui)
