Hezbollah on Saturday (28/9/2024) confirmed that Hassan Nasrallah—who led the Iran-backed group for more than three decades—was killed in an airstrike launched by Israel.
The Israeli military said that Nasrallah was killed in Friday in what it said was a targeted airstrike against Hezbollah's stronghold, which was under a residential building on the outskirts of Beirut.
“On Friday, September 27, 2024, Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the terrorist organization Hezbollah and one of its founders, was eliminated by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), along with Ali Karki, Commander of Hezbollah's Southern Front, and several other Hezbollah commanders,” the IDF said in a statement statement on Saturday.
At the age of 32, Hezbollah unanimously selected Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah as secretary general in 1992 to replace Sayyed Abbas al-Musawi who was killed in a rocket attack from an Israeli helicopter gunship in southern Lebanon.
In its statement, the IDF said that during his leadership, “he was responsible for the murder of many Israeli civilians and soldiers, as well as the planning and implementation of thousands of terrorist activities.”
“He was responsible for ordering and carrying out terrorist attacks around the world in which civilians from various countries were killed,” the statement added.
Earlier, the IDF also announced that it had killed two other senior Hezbollah members in targeted airstrikes in Lebanon on Friday.
Muhammad Ali Ismail, commander of the Hezbollah Missile Unit in southern Lebanon, and his deputy, Hussein Ahmad Ismail, were “eliminated” during a precise IAF strike, the IDF said in a statement on X.
“Ali Ismail was responsible for directing a number of terrorist attacks against the State of Israel, including the firing of rockets into Israeli territory and the launch of surface-to-surface missiles into central Israel on Wednesday,” the IDF said.
Hezbollah denied Israel's announcement of the deaths.
Friday's attack on senior Hezbollah members came just days after the IDF said it had killed Ibrahim Muhammad Qabisi, head of Hezbollah's Missile and Rocket Forces in an attack targeting Beirut's Dahieh area.
Another senior commander of the unit was also killed in the targeted attack, the Israeli military said.
According to the IDF, Qabisi joined Hezbollah in the 1980s and held several significant military roles, including as a senior officer in Hezbollah and commander of its Missile Unit.
Qabisi is a “significant source of knowledge in the missile field,” and has close ties to senior military leaders in Hezbollah, the IDF said.
It was not clear how many people were injured or killed in the attack on Hezbollah's headquarters and Israel has not commented on the death toll.
Lebanon's Health Ministry said six people were killed and 91 others injured in several Israeli attacks on Friday. The Epoch Times could not independently verify the figures.
On Monday, Lebanese authorities said Israeli strikes killed more than 490 people, including at least 90 women and children, and injured 1,600 others.
In a recorded message, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Lebanese civilians to heed Israel's call to evacuate, saying "take this warning seriously."
“Please get out of danger now,” Netanyahu said. “Once our operation is complete, you can return safely to your home.”
