Trump Warns China's Economy Nearing Collapse, US-China Trade in Disconnect

On Monday (May 5), US President Donald Trump bluntly told the media aboard Air Force One that since the Nixon era, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been deceiving the United States. Now it is time for them to suffer the consequences. The severance of trade relations between the US and China is no longer just a warning, but a reality.
According to the latest data, China’s factories shrank the most in 16 months, and export orders hit a three-year low. What made Beijing even more worried was Trump’s firm statement that he had no intention of talking to CCP leader Xi Jinping.
“On Monday, President Trump openly said that under the US’s high tariffs, the CCP’s economy is being decimated, and that Beijing is eager to make peace and reach a trade deal with the US. Trump also said that the US has been losing hundreds of billions of dollars a year in trade with China, and now it’s time to make a fair deal to turn things around,” White House reporter Tao Ming of New Tang Dynasty TV reported.

Trump emphasized that the CCP has been playing America since the Nixon era. The US is now negotiating trade with many countries, including China, with a focus on fair trade.
“So we have meetings with almost all countries, including China, and ultimately the decision is still up to me. It’s not a big deal to sign — in some cases it will be signed, but we don’t feel like we have to sign anything,” he said.
Epoch Times columnist Wang He: “Trump is running a global tariff policy, but other countries are willing to talk to the U.S. On the contrary, the CCP is fighting back, so the U.S. is focusing on pressuring Beijing.”
Official Chinese government data shows that in April this year, factory activity shrank the most in 16 months, and export orders plunged to the lowest level since 2022.
Trump said in an interview with NBC last week that China’s economy was close to collapse.

On May 3, at an “Open House” event at the CCP Embassy in the US, CCP Ambassador Xie Feng said that China does not want to fight a tariff war. Last week, the CCP said it was evaluating the possibility of negotiating with the US. But Trump reiterated on Sunday that he had no plans to talk to Xi Jinping, and said that the US-China trade relationship was now severed.
Trump (May 4, 2025): “No, I have no plans to talk to him. But the Chinese and our team are discussing things. Now, we basically don’t trade with China anymore, because the tariffs are so high, they can’t do business. So we’re saving billions of dollars.”
According to a Bloomberg report on May 2, in response to the economic pressure from the trade war, the CCP has quietly granted tariff exemptions to some US imports, totaling about US$40 billion, equivalent to a quarter of China’s total imports from the US last year. Many observers say this is a sign that the CCP is no longer able to withstand the pressure.
Wang He: “Because the economic gap between the US and China is so large, and China has been enjoying a trade surplus with the US, the US has the upper hand in this tariff war. The US’s goal is to reshape the global economic order, including economic relations with China. In this situation, the CCP is in dire straits. After being hit by heavy pressure, the Chinese economy cannot withstand it. Therefore, the CCP’s position has changed and they are willing to evaluate the negotiations with the US.” (Hui)
