Quoted from the UN Women page, International Women's Day is a moment of reflection on the struggle of women in fighting for equal rights and opportunities in various areas of life. This commemoration also serves as a reminder that the struggle to achieve gender equality still requires commitment and action from all parties.
To learn more about this commemoration, here is the complete history of International Women's Day, along with the theme, and how to celebrate it.
History of International Women's Day:
Quoted from the National Today page, women's rights began to be fought for by a political activist and supporter of women's rights, Susan B Anthony on the 14th Amendment. She fought for all American citizens to gain citizenship, including the right to vote.

The 14th Amendment was ratified in 1968, but their right to vote remained unsecured. In 1969, Susan and Elizabeth Cady founded the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) to fight for women's rights.
In the early 1900s, women experienced wage inequality, lack of voting rights, and overwork. As reported on the International Women's Day page, the oppression and inequality experienced by women at that time encouraged them to become more vocal and active in fighting for women's rights.
Then, in 1908, 15 thousand women marched in New York City to demand shorter working hours, better wages, and also to be given the right to vote. In 1909, based on the declaration of the Socialist Party of America, National Women's Day was first celebrated on February 28. This day was celebrated on the last Sunday of February until 1913.
In 1910, German suffragette and leader of the Women's Office, Clara Zetkin, proposed the idea of International Women's Day. The idea was presented at the International Women's Conference held in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Clara Zetkin proposed that Women's Day be celebrated on the same day in every country. The conference, attended by more than 100 women from 17 countries, approved Zetkin's proposal and thus International Women's Day was born.

International Women's Day was celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland on March 19, 1911. More than one million women and men attended the International Women's Day rally campaigning for women's rights and ending discrimination.
In other parts of the world, International Women's Day was first celebrated by Russian women on February 23, 1913, the last Sunday in February based on the Julian calendar. Then, based on the Gregorian calendar, International Women's Day was agreed to be celebrated annually on March 8.
In 1975, International Women's Day was celebrated for the first time by the United Nations (UN). Furthermore, the UN announced its first annual theme in 1996, namely "Celebrating the Past, Planning the Future" which was followed in 1997 with the theme "Women at the Peace Table", in 1998 with "Women and Human Rights", in 1999 with "A World Free from Violence against Women", and so on every year.
International Women's Day 2025 Theme:
Returning to the UN Women website, the UN releases an official theme every year to commemorate International Women's Day, including 2025. This year, the UN has set the theme for International Women's Day as "For ALL women and girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment".
The theme means "For ALL women and girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment". This theme invites people around the world to work together to realize equal rights, equality, and opportunities for everyone.
